In 2012, the federal government determined that the gray wolf population in Wisconsin had recovered and removed it from the Endangered Species list.
This allowed Wisconsin, through the DNR to responsibly manage its wolf population. A wolf number goal was set and in order to try to achieve that goal, Wisconsin established a wolf hunting season. The season was successfully carried out for 2 years.
Unfortunately, in 2014, a judge in Washington D.C. ruled that the wolf had to be placed back on the endangered species list. This ended Wisconsin’s wolf season. As a result, wolf numbers are rising and we are seeing more problems of wolves killing domestic animals and threatening the deer herd.
We have been patiently asking Congress to delist the wolf so Wisconsin can once again manage its own wolf population. Unfortunately, to date, Congress has not acted. Therefore, we believe it is time for Wisconsin to use all of the tools it has to put pressure on Congress to de-list the wolf for good.
